Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic doctors are educated and trained in accredited naturopathic medical colleges. They diagnose, prevent, and treat acute and chronic illness and establish optimal health by supporting the person's inherent self-healing process. Rather than just suppressing symptoms, naturopathic doctors work to identify underlying causes of illness, and develop personalized treatment plans to address them. Their Therapeutic Order™, identifies the natural order in which all therapies should be applied to provide the greatest benefit with the least potential for damage.

Naturopathic practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts includes the following diagnostic and therapeutic modalities: clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy), public health measures, hygiene, counseling, and homeopathy.

Comprehensive Labs

Ordering and interpreting lab work and diagnostic testing is a skill that requires time. Our center offers standard and advanced diagnostic testing. These profiles help practitioners identify root causes of dysfunction and deliver better outcomes through treating clinical imbalances that may inhibit optimal health.

Acupuncture

The practice of Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body by the insertion of very fine sterile solid needles. Acupuncture points along particular meridians are used to activate the body’s own energy to facilitate healing. This stimulus may also be administered to the points using mild electrical stimulation (with or without needles), pressure techniques with the hands (“acupressure”), or the application of heat by various methods. Both the root cause, as well as the symptoms of the condition are addressed in an effort to restore the body’s natural flow of energy or balance. Myofascial trigger points are regularly used in acupuncture treatments to reduce pain and restore function.

Licensed Acupuncturists' extensive training focuses on East Asian systems of physiology and treatment of pathology, along with a sound background in western science. Licensed acupuncturists complete a three year master’s degree in acupuncture or a four year doctoral training program. Medical Doctors and Doctors of Osteopathy may complete certificates in acupuncture.

East Asian Medicine

As a complex medical system, Traditional East Asian Medicine has treated and prevented illness for thousands of years. This system of healing approaches the patient as a “whole” being, composed of body, mind, and spirit, and strives to achieve a balance between nature and the two mutually interdependent forces of yin and yang. It also directly treats physical problems and musculoskeletal imbalances. In addition to acupuncture, additional modalities are available to further enhance the healing process, including moxibustion (a type of heat therapy in which an herb is burned on or above the skin to warm and stimulate an acupuncture point or affected area), herbal supplementation, cupping (application of suction to stimulate an acupuncture point or affected area), electroacupuncture, and hands on techniques.

Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic Medicine is a holistic practice of medicine originated in India about 5000 years ago. The word Ayurveda is derived from Sanskrit words Ayur meaning 'life' and Veda meaning 'Science' or 'knowledge'. Thus, Ayurveda translates to the 'science of life'. Ayurveda teaches us how to live our daily life in harmony with nature. According to Ayurveda, health is a balanced state of mind, body and consciousness that can be achieved by following a diet and lifestyle based on one's constitution or prakruti. Ayurveda recognizes Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth as the basic building blocks of material world. These five elements manifest in the human body as three energies or doshas. Air and Ether constitute a Vata dosha. Vata is the energy of movement which is characterized by the mobile nature of Air. Fire and Water elements constitute a Pitta dosha. Pitta represents the transformational energy of Fire. Water and Earth elements combine as a Kapha dosha. Kapha delineates the cohesive energy of Water. The functions of kapha dosha in our body are related to structural integrity and lubrication. Vata, Pitta and Kapha together are called tridosha. Every person has these three doshas in their body. The constitution of a person is a unique and specific combination of the three doshas which never changes in a person's lifetime. It makes every person unique because each individual has their own pattern of energy, their own mental, emotional and physical characteristics and predispositions. The diseased state in Ayurveda is perceived as improper functioning at cellular level due to imbalance in the doshas or presence of toxins. Doshas are affected by changes in our external environment like changes in the seasons, weather, dietary choices, emotions, stress, physical activity, and ageing. These changes can cause imbalance in doshas that can produce physical and psychological symptoms. Appropriate changes to diet and lifestyle and use of herbs can help to restore balance.

Dr. Verma also offers Abhyanga, a type of therapy that uses a dosha specific herb infused warm oil which is applied to the body from head to toe.
